slug: future-simple title: Future Simple group: tenses order: 9 summary: A decision made now, a prediction, or a promise about the future. formula: S + will + V(bare)
When to use it
Future simple is used for spontaneous decisions made at the moment of speaking, predictions about the future (especially with I think, probably), and promises or offers.
I will help you carry those bags.
It is different from going to, which is used for plans already decided before speaking.
Form
| Subject | Affirmative | Negative | Question |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / You / He / She / It / We / They | will go | will not go | will you go? |
will never changes regardless of subject. The main verb always stays in the base form (no -s, no -ing, no -ed). The contraction won't = will not.
Examples
- It looks cloudy — I think it will rain later.
- Will you be at the meeting tomorrow?
- Don't worry — I won't forget to bring your book.
Common mistakes
- Adding
-sto the verb: "She will goes" should be "She will go". - Using future simple for a pre-planned future event: "I will meet her at the airport tomorrow" — if the plan was made in advance, prefer "I am meeting her" or "I am going to meet her".
